Chetna Heroes

Across India, thousands of people quietly dedicate themselves to improving the lives of others — without visibility, resources, networks or recognition. Mission Chetna finds them, connects them and celebrates them.

Chetna means awareness: being awake to what is around you. Goodness grows when goodness is recognised.

Who a Chetna Hero is

People who started without waiting for permission

A retired teacher running a school for construction workers’ children on a pavement. A family that has cooked for strangers every day for twenty years. A farmer who spent a decade reviving a dead pond. A young woman who taught herself accounting to keep a village self-help group honest. None of them waited for recognition, funding or permission. They began, and they kept going — and the goodness they create is invisible to every index the country keeps.

A Chetna Hero is anyone whose sustained work improves the lives of others and shows the five foundations in practice: integrity, responsibility, compassion, respect and stewardship. Individuals, small groups and grassroots organisations all qualify.

Why recognition matters

People imitate what society celebrates. Modern society visibly celebrates wealth, power, celebrity and conventional achievement. Contribution needs the same visibility. Recognition is not decoration — it is a mechanism for changing social norms.

  • Makes contribution visible, respected and aspirational
  • Connects heroes to peers, expertise and support
  • Helps individual work grow into lasting organisations

How Mission Chetna works

Five movements, repeated: the practical form of an intention the founder first stated at the TISS convocation — find the people already working selflessly for society and help their work outlive them.

  1. 1
IdentifyNominations from citizens, partners and our network; every story is verified before it is told.
  2. 2
ConnectHeroes meet one another, academic partners who can study and strengthen their methods, and volunteers from the IIT Alumni Council who bring legal, financial and digital skills.
  3. 3
StrengthenDocumentation, mentoring and introductions to funders — so the work can be seen, trusted and supported.
  4. 4
RecognisePublicly, repeatedly and with dignity, through the Institute’s platforms and events.
  5. 5
MultiplyRecognised goodness inspires more of it. The ecosystem grows, and the social norm moves with it.
